Protect North Carolina from Dirty Factory Farm Gas

All North Carolinians deserve clean air, safe drinking water, and a healthy environment. But there’s a new threat to these most basic rights. It’s called directed biogas, and you can help stop it.

For decades, the pork industry has profited not only off animals but at the expense of communities closest to the state’s factory farms, many of which are communities of color. North Carolina’s 9.5 million pigs generate more than 10 billion gallons of waste every year, and this waste has wreaked havoc on the state’s air, soil, and waterways.

Instead of much-needed reforms, the pork industry has introduced legislation to help turn its hazardous waste into yet another profit stream: directed biogas, which would increase pollution, further jeopardize public health, and help the industry avoid accountability. Section 11 of the North Carolina Farm Act of 2021 promotes the development of harmful biogas facilities while seeking to limit the rights and protections of community members affected by them.

North Carolinians must take action against this dangerous legislation NOW.
